Giant Sloths

Giant Sloths and also animals that went extinct during the period of humanity and cave men

Giant sloths were a species that lived in the Americas. also known as Megalonychid, or Ground sloths,

They were the largest ever of this species. They were about 2 metres high, and were the size of elephants. But they were pushed to extinction by the end of the Ice Age, around 10,000 years ago, and probabaly by hunting by incoming populations of humans. Perhaps with arrows, like clovis flint and such stones types.

This a painful demise, after lasting for around 35million years.

Some like to belive there are still some in caves, in the Amazon. Indeed there was a British TV programme about it but it did not find anything. They stood upto 10 feet high, and weighed 3 tons. They could stand 20 feet high if standing on all their back 2 feet to reach tops of trees. At a time when horses were tiny, and camels, and such lived in North America.

They lived from Iowa, into South America.

A case of a find was another discovery by Thomas Jefferson.

They were all herbivores.

Megalonyx jeffersonii

Their main surviving relatives today are three toed sloths, as Pygmy Three-toed Sloth (Bradypus pygmaeus)
Maned Three-toed Sloth (Bradypus torquatus), Pale-throated Three-toed Sloth (Bradypus tridactylus) and Brown-throated Three-toed Sloth (Bradypus variegatus)
Family Megalonychidae
and two toed sloths, Linnaeus's Two-toed Sloth (Choloepus didactylus) and Hoffmann's Two-toed Sloth (Choloepus hoffmanni)

These creatures are about big enough to be cradled by a average height human, so much samllr, but still remarkable little creatures. Indeed it is funny seeing them walk super slowly along the floor, they are so slow. Famously these creatures sleep for most of the day, as of the way they live in trees.

http://www.smithsonianmagazine.com/issues/2003/may/cuba.php?page=4 The final proof they were, that the last were in Cuba and the rest of the Carribean in 5000BC.
